Biografie

Originally trained in Butoh by Makiko Tominaga and Yuko Kaseki, Astrid Endruweit made her first appearance on the stage with ‘pigg in hell’ (2000), a highly acclaimed solo directed by one of the pioneers of post-dramatic theatre, Michael Laub, under whose mentorship she worked as a performer from then on. Laub, a director and choreographer who from his early beginnings in the Seventies mixes and deconstructs genres, yet always focuses on the individual, eventually began a series of Portraits on the stage, in which Endruweit later appeared with her solos ‘Alone’ (2004) and ‘Asutorito Endoruwaito with Astrid Endruweit’ (2016). Having gained experience with portraiture on stage she soon became the dramaturge as well as the video artist for other editions like ‘Portrait Series Istanbul - Actresses and Aspiring Actresses’ (2010) and ‘Burgportraits’ (2011) at the Burgtheater in Vienna.

Under the distinctive direction offered by Michael Laub, Endruweit created numerous scenes for shows of his company Remote Control Productions, for example: ‘Total Masala Slammer - Heartbreak No. 5’ (2001) and ‘The H. C. Andersen Project - Tales and Costumes’ (2003), contributing texts, songs, costumes, video and choreography.

Virtuous and coincidental, sensual and forceful, at times switching from one character to another like a blizzard, obsessing on details, being comic and offensive, opening up rooms of fantasy with sparse movements and a very few words, yet transfiguring an abundance of characters from Indian schoolgirls to Berlin old men as much as entranced nuns or whores, turning into animals, objects and cartoon characters and transfixing a whole audience by it - thus Endruweit has been described by critics over the years.?

Besides working with Michael Laub / Remote Control Productions, Endruweit has worked with other artists such as Chris Kondek, Meg Stuart, Ensemble Courage, Lars Rudolph and The Incredible Herrengedeck at Taktstelle. In 2007 she released, by invitation of the Kampnagel Theatre in Hamburg, a 6-channel–video installation ‘Woman with mother’s cake. The fear of dying before having given birth.’ described by Hermann Ploebst in The Standard as no less than a ‘…flawlessly edited master piece’, the second part of which is currently in production.

Developing story lines as an associative chain of memories and dreams – pursuing her interest in theatrical expressions from different parts of the world on as well as off stage – deriving material from early job experiences, observances of people that she crosses path with, the darkest and lightest moments of her private life, also being a daughter and a mother – in her 20 years of being a performer she created a highly creative eclectic working method with an idiosyncratic imagery.

Teaching and lecturing on dance and performative techniques has brought her to the Asia-Europe Foundation, tanzfabrik Berlin, HfG Karlsruhe, Norwegian Theatre Academy and The Umbrellas of Phnom Penh artist residency program in Cambodia.
